You’ve probably asked around and gotten the same three answers everybody gets: it was a hot summer, rates went up, your system’s just old. All of those might be a little true. None of them tell you what’s happening inside your house. 

Here’s the frustrating part. The real answer usually takes a full energy audit, and who has time for that? Between work and everything else, you’re not scheduling a half-day inspection to chase eighty bucks. 

You don’t have to. In about an hour, with a $12 thermometer and your own eyes, you can narrow this down to one or two causes. Let’s get into it.

Your Bill Went Up for One of Five Reasons 

Rising cooling costs feel mysterious, but the list of suspects is short. 

The system is losing capacity as it ages, so it runs longer to do the same work. Or the airflow is choked, and the equipment strains against it. Or refrigerant is low, which quietly kills efficiency long before it stops cooling. Or your ducts are dumping cooled air into an attic. Or the system is the wrong size for the house, so it short-cycles and never gets efficient. 

Look at that list again. Only one of those is really about age. The other four are fixable, and three of them are cheap to fix. 

That’s the thing nobody tells you when they walk in and say “she’s got some years on her.” Age is a fact, not a diagnosis. 

What “Old” Actually Costs You 

A central air conditioning system doesn’t fall off a cliff. It slides. A maintained unit loses roughly one to two percent of its efficiency a year — dirty coils, tired capacitors, a fan motor pulling more amps than it used to. A neglected one loses far more. 

But that slide should be gradual. A bill that jumps $40 or $60 in a single season isn’t aging. That’s a component doing something it didn’t do last year, and it’s worth finding. 

The One-Hour Home Audit 

Pick a hot afternoon. You want the system working hard, because that’s when problems show themselves. Here’s the whole thing. 

Step One: Take the Temperature Split 

This is the single most useful measurement a homeowner can take, and almost nobody knows about it. 

Put a thermometer in the supply register closest to your indoor unit — the vent blowing cold air. Write the number down. Then hold it at the return grille, the big one that sucks air in. Write that down too. 

Subtract. The difference should land between 16 and 22 degrees. 

Under 14 degrees usually means low refrigerant or a dirty evaporator coil. Over 24 degrees points at restricted airflow, often a clogged filter or an undersized return. Either way you’ve learned something real in five minutes, and you can say it out loud to a technician. 

Step Two: Time the Cycles 

Stand there with your phone. When the system kicks on, start the timer. 

On a 95-degree afternoon, a properly sized system should run long — fifteen minutes, twenty, sometimes almost continuously. That’s normal. That’s what it was built for. 

If yours runs eight minutes and shuts off, then fires up again ten minutes later, that’s short-cycling. Oversized equipment does this, and so does a system with airflow trouble. Every restart pulls a surge of electricity, so the bill climbs while the house never quite gets comfortable.

Step Three: Check the Humidity 

Get a cheap indoor humidity gauge. Any hardware store has one for under $15. 

You want to see 45 to 55 percent when the thermostat is satisfied. Above 60 percent, your house feels clammy at 74 degrees, so you drop the thermostat to 72 to chase comfort you’re never going to get. That’s a big hidden driver of summer bills in Mississippi, and it’s a humidity problem wearing a temperature costume. 

Step Four: Walk the House 

Two minutes. Feel the air at every register, room by room. 

If the back bedroom is weak while the living room is a wind tunnel, you have a distribution problem, not an equipment problem. New outdoor units don’t fix that. A duct repair does, and usually for a fraction of the price. 

Step Five: Look at the Outdoor Unit 

Go stand next to it while it runs. Is the coil packed with grass clippings, cottonwood, or dog hair? Is a shrub grown up against it? 

That coil has to dump your house’s heat into the outside air. Block it and the compressor works harder for the same result — like running with a scarf over your face. Hose it off gently, power cut at the disconnect. That’s free money.

Notice something? The costliest problem on that list is ductwork, and it’s the one a replacement quote almost never mentions.

You can bolt a brand-new high-efficiency system onto ducts that leak a quarter of your air into the attic. The bill barely moves. Then you’re out ten grand and still confused, which is the worst outcome in this whole category.

The 2026 Wrinkle Nobody Explains at the Kitchen Table 

Two things changed recently that affect your math, and they’re worth knowing before anyone quotes you anything. 

R-410A refrigerant production ended in January 2025. It’s still sold for servicing existing systems, but it’s on a phase-down and the price keeps climbing. So a slow leak you’ve been topping off every spring is a worse deal every season. 

The other change: the federal 25C tax credit expired December 31, 2025. Up to $2,000 on a qualifying heat pump, gone. Any payback math your neighbor did in 2024 was cushioned by money that doesn’t exist now. 

Put those together and the answer shifts. When equipment costs more and subsidies are gone, the cheapest efficiency you can buy is usually the efficiency you already paid for and aren’t getting — sealed ducts, clean coils, correct airflow, right-sized capacity. 

When This Doesn’t Apply 

Fair warning on a few exceptions. 

If your bill jumped and you added a hot tub, a second refrigerator, a home office, or a teenager, the cooling system may be innocent. Check the rest of the house first. 

If your utility changed rate structures or you switched to a budget billing plan, the number on the statement can move without a single watt changing. Compare kilowatt-hours used, not dollars, year over year — that number is on your bill. 

And if the system is dead in July with a newborn or an elderly parent in the house, skip all of this. Call somebody. Comfort first, diagnosis second.
